Tips for making kiwi puree

Here are some tips for making your kiwi puree.

  • Choose slightly soft kiwi to get the best and sweetest flavor
  • Add a little bit of liquid or add another kiwi if your blender is having a hard time blending just 2 kiwis
  • Mix into other foods like yogurt, oatmeal, or cream of wheat

How to choose good kiwis for kiwi puree

To choose a ripe kiwifruit look for kiwis that give just slightly when squeezed with light pressure. You don’t want kiwis that are too squishy, because these will be overripe. An unripe kiwi will be firm.

For this recipe I used green kiwis but you can also use gold kiwi. Gold kiwi will be golden colored (of course!). They will also be slightly sweeter and less tart than green kiwi.

If you do get a few unripe kiwi simply let them sit at room temperature for 2-3 days or until they feel slightly soft. Then transfer them to the fridge. Fresh, ripe kiwifruit will last 5-10 days in the fridge.

How to store kiwi puree

Store kiwi puree in an airtight container or jar in the fridge up to 4 days. You can also store it in the freezer up to 4 months.

Can you freeze pureed kiwi?

Yes! Kiwi puree freezes well and frozen kiwi puree makes a great addition to a smoothie.

You can freeze the puree in a cube tray to get convenient, small portions that blend easily.

Can I give kiwi to my 6 month old baby?

Yes! Kiwifruit and kiwi puree can be served to babies starting at 6 months of age or when signs of readiness for solids are present. Be sure to prepare kiwi in age-appropriate ways, according to your baby’s age.

Is kiwi a common choking hazard for babies?

Yes, whole kiwi is a choking risk for babies because the flesh is slippery and firm. The small black seeds in kiwi do not pose a choking risk because they are so small.

Kiwi puree poses less of a choking risk than whole kiwi. Serving kiwi puree can be a good way to ease your mind and introduce kiwi to your baby.

However, once you and your baby are comfortable, feel free to serve whole kiwi. This will provide your baby with opportunities to practice chewing and swallowing skills with different textures.

In theory, any food can be a choking risk so be sure to always feed your baby in a safe feeding environment.

Is kiwi puree good for babies?

Yes! Kiwi puree and fresh whole kiwis are full of nutrients that support early growth and make a great addition to a baby’s diet. Kiwis are a good source of fiber, vitamin C and vitamin E, phytonutrients, and enzymes.

Is kiwi too acidic for babies?

Kiwi is acidic and can cause a harmless rash around your baby’s face when eaten. Kiwi can also cause or worsen diaper rash. If your baby is sensitive to acidic foods you can try applying a barrier ointment like Aquaphor to your babies face prior to eating kiwi.

Rashes from acidic foods can be mistaken for a food allergy. Kiwi is not a common allergen but allergies to kiwi are increasing.

As with all new foods, start by serving a small amount, watch for signs of a food allergy, and gradually increase the quantity of food.

Can kiwi help babies poop?

Yes! Kiwi does help babies poop because it is high in soluble and insoluble fiber and water.

Best tips for making kiwi puree
